Why We Never Walk Your Tile Roof
Florida's tile roofs are beautiful and built to last, but they have a weakness most homeowners never think about until it is too late: foot traffic. Walking a tile roof to clean it is one of the most common ways it gets damaged. We do not do it, and here is why that matters.
Tile cracks under foot
Concrete and clay roof tiles are strong against weather but brittle under a person's weight, especially along edges and ridges. A technician walking the roof to spray it can crack or chip tiles with a single misstep. On a wet, sloped roof, that risk goes up.
The damage you do not see right away
The real problem is that cracked tile often looks fine from the ground. The damage hides until the next hard Florida rain finds the crack and water works its way under the tile to the underlayment. By then the cleaning is long done, and the leak looks like it came from nowhere. Sorting out who is responsible after the fact is a headache nobody wants.
How we clean tile without walking it
We clean everything we can reach safely from the ground and ladders, and we use a professional spray drone for the rest: high and steep sections, ridges and peaks beyond ladder reach, and areas blocked by screen enclosures. The drone carries a low-pressure soft wash to those surfaces from the air. The whole roof gets a complete, even treatment, and no one ever stands on your tile.
Soft wash, never high pressure
Tile is cleaned with a soft wash, not a pressure washer. High pressure cracks tile, blows out the mortar at ridges, and forces water under the roof. A soft wash uses the cleaning solution to kill and remove algae and mildew, so the roof comes clean without force.
Why some cleaners still walk roofs
Walking the roof is simply cheaper and faster for a crew without the right equipment. The risk, though, lands on you and your roof, not on them. Keeping people off the tile is a deliberate choice, and it is one of the main reasons we invested in drone capability.
Frequently asked questions.
Does anyone walk on the roof at all?
Not on tile. We clean from the ground and ladders where we can reach safely, and the drone handles everything else.
Will soft washing damage my tile?
No. Soft wash is low pressure and gentle on the tile and the mortar. It is the standard method for cleaning tile roofs safely.
Can you reach steep or screened-in areas?
Yes. Those hard to reach areas are exactly what the drone is for.
How often should a Florida tile roof be cleaned?
It depends on shade and exposure, but most benefit from cleaning every few years, and a protective coating like CitraShield extends the time between cleanings.
